Joe McCurdy Named New Athletic Director

May 6, 2025

Dear St. Pius X Community,

As you may know, our current Athletics Director, Todd Mooney, is leaving St. Pius X at the end of the school year. We received over 50 applications and interviewed 14 people for this important role and on behalf of our hiring committee, St. Pius X Catholic High School is thrilled to announce Mr. Joe McCurdy as the next Athletics Director!

When we started this process in February, we sought a transformational leader who embodies our Catholic identity, has a deep love and passion for St. Pius X, values both internal and external relationships, is skilled in logistical management, and can work positively with our coaches and athletes. The search required us to think in unconventional ways because we all agreed that this position required a special person with both a passion for St. Pius X and a strong business acumen in order to be successful.

Joe McCurdy worked in the sports broadcasting industry for over 30 years as the Supervising Producer of CNN World Sport under Turner Broadcasting. Joe is a dynamic and passionate sports storyteller and brand enhancer. He has been a part of the St. Pius X community since 2013 as the proud father of Emma '16, Finn '18, Maggie '20, and Owen '22. During his children’s years here, when he was not at work, St. Pius X was his second home. His participation in many of our sports programs enhanced the game day experience. When the Athletics Director job came open, he felt called to it as to a vocation, and he jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this community full-time.

When considering the qualifications for our next Athletics Director, we found that Joe has qualities that are hard to teach. His love for St. Pius X was evident throughout his interview, and he brings a unique ability to enhance our school’s athletic brand. Joe understands the importance of faith, family, and the tradition of success in our athletic history. Joe outlined his four C’s, which are Catholic identity, culture, communication, and championships. He is a leader who has the ability to innovate and help push our school brand forward through athletics. We look forward to working with him in the years to come.

Joe has been happily married to his wife Maura for 30 years and they are officially “empty nesters” as their youngest child, Owen, is a junior at Santa Clara University. The McCurdys are members of the Cathedral of Christ the King. Joe will start his duties on July 1, but will work with Mr. Mooney in May and June in order to help with the transition. Please join me in welcoming Joe.

Domini Sumus,

Aaron Parr '06

President

Quote from Mr. Joe McCurdy:

This is a dream come true. When I began looking at what the next chapter of my working life might bring, I had no idea of the plans God might have in store for me, and I could never have imagined a more perfect fit. From the first day we stepped on campus years ago, we knew St. Pius was a special place. Over a decade later the lasting relationships, riveting competition, and passionate support for Golden Lions have only enhanced that feeling. The opportunity to do something you love, with people you love is such a blessing. I will not take that for granted, and I cannot wait to get started.
