Pullen Named Golden Lions Head Football Coach

St. Pius X Catholic High School is delighted to announce Adam Pullen as the next head football coach. Coach Pullen will become just the 10th head football coach in the Golden Lions' 68-year program history.

“Change is often difficult, but change can also be exciting. The difficult part is over. And excitement is exactly the emotion I will feel from now through kickoff next season,” St. Pius X Director of Athletics Joe McCurdy announced. “We left no stone unturned in our search, knowing we had to move both quickly yet slow enough to make the right choice for our future. We’ve found that future in Adam.”

The Football Head Search Committee, led by Director of Athletics Joe McCurdy, included school President Aaron Parr ‘06, interim Principal Kristin Kramer ’98, former Principal Steve Spellman, current parent and incoming Athletics Association president Bob Eichenberg, and school chaplain Fr. Robbie Cotta. The process also included a focus group involving student-athletes, parents and key stakeholders. A nationwide search produced nearly 100 applicants.

Pullen was the Defensive Coordinator at Pope High School this past season. Previously, he spent 8 years at Westminster Schools as the Defensive Coordinator under head coach Gerry Romberg.

Coach Pullen expressed his gratitude for his selection by saying, “My family and I are excited and grateful to be joining the St. Pius X community. Golden Lion football is rooted deeply in a tradition of pride, toughness, and excellence. We will work tirelessly to uphold this standard and produce champions both on and off the field. Domini Sumus!”

“As exciting as Coach Pullen’s coaching experience and relationships are, I am just as excited to have him join the St. Pius X faculty as a science teacher. As a teacher at Westminster, Mr. Pullen was awarded the Westminster Excellence in Teaching Award as well as the national PhysTEC Teacher of the Year award,” added interim Principal Kramer. “Moreover, the Westminster student body chose to dedicate their yearbook to him in 2020, a testament to his positive relationships with students both on and off the field.”

Pullen hails originally from Buchanan, Georgia, where his father Randy was a football coach at Haralson County High School for 20 years. Pullen is a graduate of the University of West Georgia, and later earned a Masters in Secondary Education Curriculum and Instruction (Physics) from the University of Alabama. Coach Pullen and his wife Margaret live in Atlanta with their two young children Millie (20 months) and John (4 months).

Coach Pullen will start at St. Pius X on January 5.

St. Pius X Catholic High School is thankful for all those who gave their time, dedication and prayer to select the best leader for our football program. Please join us in congratulating coach Pullen as he extends the legacy of Golden Lion athletics.
