A crack of a helmet marked the start of the game, when dual-position senior Conley Goodlife (#3) lowered his shoulder after running up the sideline for a thirty-yard run on the very first play. Directly after, junior Day Gist (#87) received a twenty-yard pass, and senior running back Aiden Francois (#1) displayed impressive talent by juking defenders for another thirty-yard run on the following play. The Golden Lions knew they were off to a fiery start when, another two-way player, senior fullback and defensive end John Taylor (#0) pushed himself into the end zone for the first touchdown, giving St. Pius X the lead.

However, Winder-Barrow’s star running back, MJ Dowdy, responded with a ninety-nine-yard return to set up a Bulldogg touchdown, levelling the score and reminding the Golden Lions that they would have to earn this victory.

Aside from that play, the St. Pius X defense demonstrated their admirable grit with Taylor pushing back the line of scrimmage and junior defensive end James Boggs (#8) preventing any positive yardage. Soon after, Winder-Barrow threw a lob down the field, but it was read perfectly and blocked by Goodlife (#3).

Gaining possession, the Golden Lions blasted down the field, led by Francois barreling down the field and side-stepping around defenders for two consecutive first downs. Then, junior quarterback Cohen George (#6) found a break in the defense to obtain a third consecutive first down, causing the fans and the sideline to erupt.

Keeping their rhythm, Taylor and senior quarterback Luke Wilson (#16) moved the chains again, placing St. Pius X in reach of the end zone, which George swiftly snuck into for the SPX’s second touchdown, making the score 14-7.

Back on defense, the Golden Lions formed a strong line where sophomore linebacker Ben Dornbush (#35) slammed a Bulldogg’s offensive player to the ground while senior linebacker Max Poirier (#19) made the defense airtight. Ultimately, by the end of the first half, the Bulldogs managed to score another touchdown despite SPX’s resilience.

Determined to win this close contest, the Golden Lions returned to the locker room to organize their changes and sprinted back out pumped up.

At the start of the second half, junior linebacker Liam Sciacchetano (#22) forced the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage, which was followed up by energetic attacks by the Golden Lions that handed possession to SPX’s offense.

Play by play, Wilson and Francois bounded across the field, flying past defenders and directly into their ten-yard line. Then, Francois trampled over defenders and into the end zone, placing St. Pius X in the lead 21-14.

Maintaining PiHi’s momentum, junior defensive lineman Daniel Stribling (#55) sacked the Bulldogg’s quarterback, and every play was met with a pride of lions eager to bring them down.

As the ball was handed back over to George, SPX inched consistently up the field like an unstoppable force, but slowed down after reaching Winder-Barrow’s second yard line. Then, in one final push, George got a clutch first down that secured another Golden Lion touchdown on the following play.

With St. Pius X up 28-14, Winder-Barrow responded with another touchdown before forcing a St. Pius X turnover, giving the Bulldogs possession with only minutes remaining. Determined to not allow a single yard, Taylor and Sciacchetano both sacked their quarterback, and the opponents were stuck on their side of the field. Then, as the clock ticked down its final seconds, the Bulldoggs executed a desperate trick lateral pass play, the old hook and ladder, but the attempt was intercepted by Goodlife, who ran directly into the end zone, bringing the crowd to their feet and ending the game with a score of 34-21.
