Golden Lions Roar Past McNair 42-13

Complete Game Recap by SPX Student Journalist Marc Springer

As the sun set on the legendary George B. Maloof Stadium and the sky turned to gold, the Golden Lions marched heroically down the steps and onto the field, ready to dominate the game. The Jungle turned up the energy, proudly chanting "Pius" to fire up the team, but without a moment wasted, the referee blew the whistle and the match kicked off.

St. Pius X started off strong, holding down the McNair offense as they tried their best to inch their way up the field. Unfortunately for McNair, senior Carter Schwalb (7), last week's defensive player of the week, brought them to a crawl, and defensive back Conley Goodlife (3) smacked down a lob, preventing a potentially dangerous touchdown.

Handing the ball over to the offense, running back Aiden Francois (1) quickly powered through tackles and juked defenders to rush 27 yards down the field, placing the Golden Lions within scoring range. With St. Pius X's new formation with seniors Luke Wilson (16) and John Taylor (0) at the helm, the McNair defense didn't stand a chance, allowing them to slide into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.

Immediately after, McNair fumbled the ball, giving SPX another opportunity to score. Quarterback Cohen George (6) seized the opportunity, bolting 20 yards along the edge of the field, followed by relentless attacks by Francois and Goodlife. However, unable to score, SPX handed the reins to the defense, where Boggs, Schwalb, and senior Max Poirier worked seamlessly to keep McNair in their own ten yard line. Then, instead of punting the ball, the Mustangs went for a failed fourth-down play, setting St. Pius X up right in the ten-yard line. Taking advantage of the situation, Francois ran cleanly in the end zone putting PiHi even further in the lead at 14-0.

After a strong SPX defense, McNair threw a pass that sailed through the air and right into the hands of Goodlife for an interception.  The  26-yard gain left The Jungle and fans throughout the stands roaring. Keeping up the momentum, George scrambled out of a collapsed pocket and passed it to junior Ryder O'Malley (15) for the first down. Then again George found a path in between defenders, dodging and weaving to place SPX on the 2 yard line. Not a moment after the snap, the quarterback hurdled into the end zone setting the tone for the rest of the contest with Pius in the lead 21-0.

Once the whistle blew for halftime, the Lions ran into the locker room feeling confident and ready to come back out to dominate the rest of the match. Despite their confidence, however, the Lions fumbled the ball, leading to a McNair touchdown. Determined to make up for the fumble, the Lions charged down the field, play after play, and senior John Taylor drove into the end zone for another touchdown.

Keeping up the tempo, Schwalb pushed back the Mustang's line of scrimmage, forcing McNair to make clumsy decisions under pressure, like throwing a pass intercepted by junior Nate French (26). With the foot on the gas, George, Taylor, and senior Sawyer Brandon (32) scrambled up the field near enough for Francois to practically walk into the end zone. With the score at 35-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter, everyone was excited for the first St. Pius X victory when McNair threw a Hail Mary to score another touchdown and remind the Lions that they're still in the game.

St. Pius X didn't take it lightly and blocked their extra-point attempt while using that same energy to drive back down the field. O'Malley returned the kick to the fifty-yard line, while Brandon moved the chains to get even closer. Then, Wilson ran the ball through the middle, breaking tackles and stepping inside the end zone to seal St. Pius X's victory.

After Friday's outstanding performance by the St. Pius X Golden Lions, ending in a final score of 42-13, everyone is excited to see if they can continue their momentum into next week for the difficult matchup against Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia.
