In yesterday's Major League Baseball Draft, Tazwell "Taz" Butler (SPX '21) was selected in the 10th round (301st pick overall) by the Houston Astros.
After graduating from St. Pius X in 2021, Taz spent three years at Walters State Community. After redshirting his first year, Taz became a big part of the Senators pitching staff over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, going 10-0 with a 3.20 ERA, 2 saves, 105 SO in 78.2 innings. Taz spent his junior and senior seasons at Kansas State University, where he had 4 saves and struck out 82 batters over 81.2 innings.
Taz is the 9th Golden Lion alumnus to be selected by a team in the MLB Draft in the 68 year history of the school.
