ATLANTA - A successful fourth-ever season of flag football at St. Pius X Catholic High School is in the books, and by many accounts, it was the best campaign yet.
Not only did the Golden Lions win the area title by going undefeated in Area 6-Division 4 play, they also topped Pace Academy to end the Knights' impressive run of having won the area title every year since flag football was first contested in GHSA back in 2020. For the Golden Lions, the area title is the third in four seasons.
Junior quarterback and safety
Sofia Pihera was named the Area Player of the Year. Also making the All-Area team was senior
Eva Russell, who dominated play from her center position, and senior
Maggie Maloney, (pictured above) whose expertise as an alternate quarterback with a fantastic throwing arm allowed both Pihera and Russell to become favorable offensive weapons. Seniors
Julia Freeman, who also made All-Area, was equally effective on both sides of the ball. Joining the All-Area team honors were juniors
Emerson Grasso,
Natalie Iselin and
Emilie Edwards.
Even with the loss of some key seniors, the future looks bright for the Golden Lions flag football program for the 2026, beginning with tryouts in May for the first time.
